Renowned Kologo musician Stevo Atambire has expressed concern over the persistent gender biases that hinder women and girls from pursuing Kologo music, a traditional genre deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of northern Ghana.

In the Upper East Region, no female has taken a step to commercially demonstrate her commitment to playing Kologo music, a gap the renowned musician called for redress.

Speaking on the Zina-Yale show on A1 Radio, hosted by Moses Apiah, Atambire highlighted societal prejudices as a significant barrier. “Gender bias still makes it difficult for women or girls with aspirations to play Kologo or similar genres in the region or elsewhere. But if women can go beyond what people prejudge them and focus on the craft, they will excel,” he remarked.

Atambire, known for his mesmerizing Kologo performances and his contribution to preserving the art form, shared his personal vision of nurturing a new wave of female Kologo musicians. “My wish is to see my first daughter become a professional Kologo musician. God is in control, it will come to pass,” he said with optimism.

He cited notable female artists like Gambian multi-instrumentalist and composer Sona Jobarteh as inspirations for women to break into traditionally male-dominated music genres. “Great women are doing amazing things in these genres. They are proof that it is possible,” Atambire stated.

Reinforcing his commitment to promoting gender equality in Kologo music, Atambire extended an open invitation to train any female interested in learning the art form. “My doors are always open to any girl or woman with an interest in Kologo music. Together, we can change the narrative,” he assured.

With pioneers like Stevo Atambire advocating for inclusivity, the future of Kologo music may see more women defying stereotypes and taking center stage, enriching the cultural legacy of northern Ghana.
