Bembisi still not fully connected to national electricity grid – Assembly member

The Bembiisi community in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region is grappling with severe infrastructure challenges, including a lack of electricity, clean water, healthcare, and proper roads. According to the Assembly Member for the Kandiga Bembiisi Electoral Area, Charles Anyungba, these pressing issues continue to affect the daily lives of residents. He is calling on both the government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to provide much-needed assistance.

Speaking on A1 Radio, Mr. Anyungba highlighted that despite being close to communities with electricity access, Bembiisi remains in darkness. Residents have taken matters into their own hands, purchasing poles and attempting to connect their homes to a nearby electricity line. However, this makeshift solution is inadequate to meet the community’s needs.

“As we speak, Bembiisi is not benefiting from government-provided electricity. It is individuals within the community who have taken the initiative to buy two or three poles just to connect their homes to existing poles near the health center.”

Access to clean water is another critical issue, with many residents still relying on hand-dug wells as their primary water source. This not only poses daily hardships but also raises concerns about waterborne diseases.

Additionally, the community’s health facility is in dire need of attention. Its deteriorating condition has led many locals to bypass it in favor of better-equipped healthcare options elsewhere. Mr. Anyungba noted that while a community leader donated beds to the health center last year, this gesture alone is insufficient to address the facility’s urgent needs.

The poor state of roads in and around Bembiisi further complicates access to basic services. With roads in deplorable condition, residents face significant difficulties traveling within the community and to other areas.

Mr. Anyungba emphasized the urgent need for government and NGO intervention to improve infrastructure and services in Bembiisi. He urged authorities to prioritize the community’s road network and invest in educational infrastructure, including the completion of the ongoing school project.

“The roads in the community are in a terrible state, so we are calling on the assembly to fix them. Our school also needs urgent attention. We are still appealing to the government and NGOs to come to our aid.”
